READING GIFT PROGRAM
EXPECTATIONS
The Reading Gift Program requires participants to read a specified number of books and later give a verbal comprehensive overview of those readings before earning any gifts. The number of books to be read will vary depending on the age of the participant, but will not exceed 20. Participants shall be allowed some notes (two index cards per book).
CRITERIA
Participants must provide documents of at least one of the following criteria:
• Current tax filings showing that the applicant belongs to a low-income family according to size and household income
• School transcripts showing no higher than a 2.5 grade point average from an educational institution or home school
• A home utility bill showing primary residency in a distressed area (zip code) according to U.S. Census calculations
All of our books will be organized inside a curriculum that the participant decides, with the cooperation of a mentor that they provide. The books and curriculum are designed by licensed educators and persons who have some post-secondary education.
ATTACH
A 300-500 word, typed autobiographical essay (10 point type size, double-spaced with a cover letter) or a 5 to 10 minute video in professional attire and setting.
CRITERIA FOR BEING A MENTOR IN THE READING GIFT PROGRAM
Mentors shall be recruited and acquired by the program participants but must be approved by the 20 Books Program Directors. Mentors must be 21 years of age or older, have a resume for submission, documentation of employment, some post secondary education and give both a written and verbal recommendation for their applying mentee.
The mentor will ensure that their mentee reads the required books and is prepared for evaluation for determination of gifts. Failure for the mentor to follow through with his or her obligation may result in the participant’s failure to successfully complete the Reading Gift Program.
